8. Photoshoot
I woke up much later than I normally do that day, only because I wasn’t going to school. As soon as I brushed my teeth, I got straight to business. I triple checked that I had everything I needed for the very important event happening that day.
It was the long awaited Kuchipudi Rangapravesam photoshoot- the day when the dancer is treated like maharani, a.k.a the queen. All the aunties giving her the royal treatment. From pinning up the dress to coloring the hands and feet with red sharpie, they do it all for you. The photoshoot is the day that not only I, but so many other dancers look forward to, leading up to the Rangapravesam.
In the numerous Kuchipudi Rangapravesams I’ve been to during my dance journey, I have always loved looking at the beautiful images of the dancer in the event brochures, and those blown up photos on the easels and banners. The skillfully sharp eyeliner, the vibrant colors of the intricately sewn dresses, the stone jewelry shining perfectly in the light, the impressive poses…I could go on and on about what catches my eye when I look at those images. The images taken on this day create lasting memories for a dancer, and allow her to relive her Rangapravesam through pictures, whenever she wants to.
By the time I got done checking the inventory, Anu aunty had rung the doorbell and began unloading all of the makeup and hair supplies. Shortly after, Harini aunty joined to help out with Taara's readiness. She also thoughtfully brought food for all of us! Taara got to come home early to join the party!
While doing my makeup, Anu aunty had some great ideas for the photoshoot and wanted to have some props. Luckily one aunty had the lamps and another had the peacock feathers we were looking for. We also realized I was missing a waist belt in solid gold and Taara needed anklets. My dad went to collect all these items and meet us at the venue while mom, Anu aunty, Harini aunty, Taara and I went straight to the venue, somewhere in Tigard.
Ravi uncle and his Cute Clicks crew were all set up and ready to go and they patiently captured all the poses that we wanted, in both the outfits. Even though I was not dancing that day, just staring at the lights was enough for me to sweat like crazy. It all actually felt more tiring than actual dancing, but I knew it was worth all the sweat and (Taara's) tears, for a whatsapp group called "Raaga's Photoshoot" and hundreds of amazing images awaited us just a few days later! We then had the great problem of having to choose just a few for brochures and banners!
