Rangapravesam- the year since!

It's been a year since my Rangapravesam on July 14th, 2024, and every emotion I felt before, during, and upon completion, are still fresh in my memory. I am grateful for my teacher's trust in me and for my family's support for me that showcased the best dancer in me on stage that day! I was fortunate to be on stage to perform at a few more events since then, each helping me grow in unique ways.

Lakshmana: September 15th, 2024

At Nartana Annual day this year, we performed a dance drama where I portrayed the character of Lakshmana. I actually first learnt the choreography for this piece exactly a week before my Rangapravesam! I was scared that I would forget it all by show time but the actual challenge was more about maintaining the manly stature. It was the first time I portrayed a full length male character and I had to keep reminding myself to correct my stance and mannerisms.

Yanni's Nostalgia: 

Anu aunty's Kuchipudi choreoraphy to Yanni's nostalgia is definitely one of my favorites. I was immediately on board to perform it as the opening piece of the dance competition organized by the shooting stars foundation. This day was pretty much the most hands off my mom ever was for a dance program. I did my own make-up and most of the dressing up, and my parents didn't even attend the actual performance (they did see me perform this item in the past). I had fun performing this fusion item again- sort of a break from the traditional items!

Kanakana ruchira (Pancharathna keertana): 

Pancharatnas were new to us to dance to, and it was definitely a challenge polishing this one within a very tight window. At the program itself, it was nice to see four other dance schools perform to the remaining four Pancharatnas in different dance forms.  Observing the similarities and differences between each dance form was definitely the highlight for me that day. I also got to say hi to a few friends from other dance schools who were performing as well, which was nice!

Margazi Utsavam:

This was my first solo program after my Rangapravesam! I got the opportunity to perform a few items with my friend Uma- she completed her Rangapravesam a few months prior to me- and one by myself at the Jaya Hanuman temple for Margazi Utsavam. The prep for this program was very different because Anu aunty let us take the reigns and encouraged us to be independent and work on it with minimal help. The prep was a challenge because the weekend prior was the Pancharathna Keertana performance and we were required to attend long practice sessions, which did cut down our practice time for the Margazi program. In the end everything went well, and we got to see a bunch of friends and fellow dance classmates come to support us.

Bal Utsav- Nattuvangam:

This was the third Bal Utsav I've been a part of, but this time I didn't dance! Anu aunty gathered a group of us to perform Nattuvangam for each item that the girls were performing, as well as a short ten minute showcase in the middle to entertain while the dancers were changing their costumes. I did nattuvangam for the second to last item-Gopi Gopala. It was a super fun and upbeat item and I enjoyed swaying along to the beat and keeping tempo with Nattuvangam. This program was bittersweet in a way, where I did not get to dance, but I was so happy to see a new generation of dancers completing such a milestone performance.

Musina Muthyalakele Moragulu:

This was another amazing opportunity I got, and completely different from anything I've done before. I was given a three and a half minute song that I needed to choreograph for in order to promote an Annamayya Drama coming to Portland. It was so cool to have creative liberty and do whatever steps felt right to me in the moment, without thinking twice. The song was so peaceful and although I took my time figuring out the lyrics and the mudras and moves to go with them, I think it turned out great! I taught this choreography to a younger dance classmate, Dhanvi, and we were able to record it at the Balaji Temple with a professional videographer! Before publishing, we had Anu aunty review to make sure I didn't do a terrible job...and got the okay!! Sankara Srigiri Nada Prabho:

This was not our usual audience and definitely not our usual group of performers! "Shine the light" at PRCA was a community event, open for all. There was tap dancing, contemporary, singing, opera, and it was an honor to be able to present classical Indian dance to an audience unfamiliar with the dance form. We presented two items; the story of plastic and Sankara Sri Giri. My sister, Taara, actually got to participate in the story of plastic-it was her first performance for something other than annual day. Both items were well received and it was nice to see the audience appreciate our art form.

The most memorable part of my dance year since Rangapravesam came almost at the tail end, in the form of a performance in Hyderabad (India), at a Hanuman Temple, with my grandparents, extended family and their local friends in the audience. It was an evening where everything felt just right, and I will forever cherish the experience of dancing in India, at a temple at that, and the blessings and applause from those in attendance. ప్రకృతి సాక్ష్యమై సాగనీ విశాలవిశ్వరంగప్రవేశం

సరిగ్గా ఏడాది క్రితం, జూలై 14 2024, రాగ రంగప్రవేశం సందర్భంగా నేను రాసిన పాటలోని పల్లవి ఇది. ఈ ఏడాది జూన్ 28, 2025 న ఈ పదాలకి నిజమైన సార్థకత వచ్చిందని నాకనిపిస్తోంది!

తన మనవరాలి రంగప్రవేశం కళ్ళారా చూసినప్పటినుంచీ ఎలాగైనా తన ఇతర కుటుంబసభ్యులకీ స్నేహితులకీ కూడా తన నాట్యం చూపించాలని ఉబలాటపడింది మా అమ్మ. మేము వేసవిసెలవలకి వస్తున్నామని తెలిసిన మరుక్షణం అమ్మ మనసులో మెదిలింది- హైదరాబాదులో తన మనవరాళ్ళ నృత్య ప్రదర్శన. ఫోన్లో అమ్మ నాతో ఈ విషయం చెప్పినప్పుడు యథాలాపంగా అలాగే అని చెప్పాను- బోలెడన్ని పరికిణీలున్నాయి, పాటల రికార్డింగులున్నాయి, ఏదో ఒక పరికిణీ వేసి, అందుబాటులో ఉన్న ఒక పాట ప్లే చేసి, ఏదో ఒక డాన్స్ చేయించేద్దాములే దానిదేముంది అనుకున్నాను. మేము ఏ మాత్రం దీని గురించిన ముందస్తు ఆలోచన చెయ్యకుండా హైదరాబాదులో అడుగుపెట్టాము. వచ్చీ రాగానే జూన్ 28కి మన హాలు బుక్ చేసానని అమ్మ చెప్పాక నాకు కంగారు మొదలైంది. 

అది మొదలు, అక్కకి ఈ డాన్స్ ప్రోగ్రాం తయారీ ఫుల్ టైం జాబ్ ఐపోయింది. పిల్లలిద్దరికీ అప్పటికప్పుడు డాన్స్ బట్టలు కుట్టిచ్చింది. పెట్టుకోవాల్సిన నగలు, నటరాజు విగ్రహం తనకి తెలిసిన వాళ్ళదగ్గర అడిగి తీసుకుంది. అమ్మకి పళ్ళెం మీద రాగ చేసే డాన్స్ ఇష్టమని ఆ పళ్ళెం కోసం పది ఫోన్ కాల్స్ అయినా చేసి ఉంటుంది, ఆఖరికి ఎలాగోలా అమీర్ పేట్ లోని ఒక షాపులో దొరికింది. పిల్లలిద్దరికీ సవరం జడలు అమెజాన్ లో ఆర్డర్ పెట్టాము. అక్క రెండు మూడు షాపులకి తిరిగి కావలిసిన పిన్నులూ, మేకప్ సామాన్లు, బొట్లూ, పారాణీ లాంటివన్నీ కొనిపెట్టింది.

ఇక డాన్స్ ఎక్కడ చేయించాలన్న విషయంలో చిన్న సైజ్ అద్భుతమే జరిగింది. నాకైతే గుడిలో చేయిస్తే ఎంతో తృప్తిగా ఉంటుందనిపించింది. కానీ గుడికొచ్చేవారికి ఇబ్బంది అవుతుంది, చుట్టూ కుర్చీలు వేస్తే అక్కడ ఉండేవాళ్ళకి ఇబ్బంది అవుతుంది అని నేను ఇంక ఆ ఆలొచనవైపు వెళ్ళలేదు. అపార్ట్మెంట్ లోని హాల్ అనుకున్నాము. డాన్స్ చేసే అమ్మాయి, చూసే అతిథులు అందరూ ఒకే లెవెల్ లో ఉంటే కనపడదు, మంచి స్టేజ్ వేసి మన గార్డెన్ లో చేద్దామని మంజుల ఆంటీ సలహా ఇచ్చారు. వెంటనే శివ గారి దగ్గరికెళ్ళి స్టేజ్ చూసాము, అంతా బావుంది కానీ దాని మీద వేసే కార్పెట్ మూలంగా పళ్ళెం డాన్స్ కాదుకదా మామూలు డాన్సులు కూడా కుదరవు అని తెలుసుకున్నాము. పోనీ కార్పెట్ లేకుండా నేరుగా స్టేజ్ మీదే చేద్దామనుకుంటే దాని నిండా స్టేపుల్స్ ఉన్నాయి, ఏమాత్రం సేఫ్ కాదు అనిపించి ఆ ఆలోచన విరమించుకున్నాము.

పోనీ గుడి దగ్గర రోజూ పొద్దున్నా సాయంత్రం కుర్చీలు వేసే చోట చేయించుదాము, అక్కడ చూసేవాళ్ళు కూర్చోడానికి వంద కుర్చీలు పట్టేస్తాయి అనుకుని గుడి ట్రస్టీ శ్రీనివాస్ గారిని సంప్రదించాము. అలా చేస్తే దేవుడికి వీపు చూపించినట్టవుతుంది, గుడి బయట ఎందుకు, ఏకంగా గుడిలోనే చేయించుదాము, ఆ సాయంత్రానికి మటుకు వాక్ వే మూసేద్దాము అన్నారు. నేను ఆనందంతో ఎగిరి గంతేసాను! హనుమంతుడి పాటతో తన డాన్స్ మొదలు పెట్టాలనుకుంది రాగ, హనుమంతుడి గుడిలో చేయించాలనుకున్నాను నేను. హనుమంతుడే తన ముందరే చేయించుకుంటున్నారు, శ్రీనివాస్ గారి రూపంలో వచ్చి, అని అనిపించింది!

భోజనాల సంగతి నేను చూసుకుంటానంటూ రఘు గారు ముందుకొచ్చారు. ఏం వంటలు పెడితో బాగుంటుందో, ఎంత మందికి చేయించాలో ఇవన్నీ అక్కతో ప్రతి విషయం చర్చించి నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నారు- ఇంక మేము ఈ సంగతి మళ్ళీ ఆలోచించుకోవక్కర్లేకుండా!

రోజు weather forecast చూస్తూనే ఉన్నాము. కొన్ని సార్లు, వర్షమే లేదని చెప్పింది. కొన్నిసార్లు వర్షం తప్పదని చెప్పింది. ఎందుకైనా మంచిది,  waterproof tent వేయించుదామని సలహా ఇచ్చారు రఘు గారు, శ్రీనివాస్ గారు. గుడిలో ప్రసాదం కూడా చేయిస్తామని చెప్పారు, డిన్నర్ కి ముందర భక్తులందరికీ పెట్టడానికి. మూడు రోజులపాటు చాలా శ్రద్ధగా రాత్రీ పగలూ సాధన చేసింది రాగ, తన చెల్లితో కూడా చేయించింది వాళ్ళిద్దరూ కలిసి చేసే పాట కోసం.

అలా అభ్ర అపార్ట్మెంట్స్ బోర్డ్ పెద్దలు, గుడి పెద్దలు, మా ఇంటిలో పెద్దలు అంతా పూనుకొని రంగం సిద్ధం చేసారు. ఆహ్వానాలు వెళ్ళిపోయాయి. నాట్య ప్రదర్శనకి సమయం రానే వచ్చింది. గుడిలో పూజారి అందరిని ఆశీర్వదించారు. 

అక్క పెద్ద కూతురు సవిత పాడిన వినాయకుడి పాట తో కార్యక్రమం మొదలైంది. 

చిన్న కూతురు హసిత వ్యాఖ్యాతగా అవతారమెత్తి ఇంగ్లీషులోనూ తెలుగులోనూ స్పష్టంగా ప్రతీ పాట గురించీ అతిథులకి వివరించింది.

అనుకున్నట్టుగానే మంగాంబుధి హనుమంతా అనే హనుమంతుడి పాటతో రాగ నాట్య ప్రదర్శన మొదలు పెట్టింది. Link to this dance: https://youtu.be/_tj9Z-JjTKM

ఆ తరవాత తార వేంకటేశ్వరస్తోత్రం చెప్పింది. అందరినీ చూస్తూ మధ్యలో ఒకచోట మర్చిపోయినా బాగానే తేరుకుని స్తోత్రం పూర్తి చేసింది. తారకి తెలుగు నేర్పించే గురువుగా నాకు తను అలా స్తోత్రాన్ని కంఠతా చేసి పాడడం చాలా తృప్తినిచ్చింది. ఈ వీడియో నా దగ్గర లేదు- ఉంటే బావుండు అనిపిస్తోంది.

అప్పుడు రాగా, తార ఇద్దరూ యేమే ఓ చిట్టీ అనే ప్రయాగ రామదాసు పాటతో వేదిక ఎక్కారు. డాన్స్ విషయం పక్కన పెడితే, ఆ క్షణం నుంచి అక్కడికొచ్చిన వాళ్ళంతా తారని చిట్టీ అనే పిలవడం మొదలు పెట్టారు, :). Link to this dance: https://youtu.be/ekREvxj_Gr8

ఆ తరవాతి పాట-  బాల గోపాల తరంగం- మా అమ్మమ్మ చిన్నపుడు ఈ పాట పాడుతూ ఉండేదిట. మా అమ్మ పాట ఇది అని అమ్మా, పిన్నిలూ ఎప్పుడూ అంటూ ఉంటారు. రాగ నాట్యం మొదలుపెట్టింది. మొదట్లోనే పవనుడొచ్చాడు. కాసేపటికి వరుణుడు తోడయ్యాడు. జనమంతా వర్షంలో తడవకుండా టెంట్ కిందకి వచ్చి చేరారు, మా అందరికీ కంగారొచ్చింది, ఇప్పుడెలా అని. రాగ నాట్యం చేసుకుంటూ పోయింది. ప్రకృతి సాక్ష్యమయ్యింది- నేను కిందటేడాది పాటలో రాసుకున్నట్టు. ఎప్పుడు పాట పూర్తయ్యిందో ప్రేక్షకుల హర్షధ్వానాలతో తేరుకున్నాకే నాకు తెలిసింది! థిల్లానాలు డాన్స్ చెయ్యడం రాగకి చాలా ఇష్టం. అందులో వేగంగా వచ్చే స్టెప్స్ వెయ్యడం, గెంతడం మహదానందంగా చేస్తుంది. ఈ సారికూడా రాగశ్రీ రాగం థిల్లానా చాలా ఇష్టంగా చేసిందని నాకనిపించింది. Link to this dance: https://youtu.be/Y87NF1P7riQ

మంగళం పాటకి ముందర రాగ కాస్త ఊపిరి పీల్చుకుంటుందని ఈ లోపల సవిత రాములవారిమీద చక్కటి శ్లోకం పాడింది. దీని రికార్డింగ్ వీడియోలో మిస్ అయ్యింది. ఆ తరవాత నేను శివుడిమీద రాసిన మంగళం పాటకి రాగ చేసిన డాన్స్ కూడా వీడియోలో మిస్ అయ్యింది. అందుకు నాకు ఒకింత బాధ కలిగినా ఇంత మంచి అనుభూతులు పంచిన నృత్యప్రదర్శనకి కొన్ని వీడియోలు మిస్ అవ్వడం దృష్టిచుక్కలు మాత్రమే! 

పెద్దలంతా తలో చెయ్యీ వేసారు. రాగ నాట్యప్రదర్శన అద్భుతంగా జరిగింది. అమ్మమ్మ కోరిక తీరింది. హనుమంతుడి అనుగ్రహం, అతిథుల ఆశీస్సులు దొరికాయి. వెలకట్టలేనన్ని అనుభూతులు సొంతమయ్యాయి. ఇందుకు సహకరించిన ఎందరో మహానుభావులు, అందరికీ వందనములు!
